Osceola, WI real estate

Osceola is a river town on the St. Croix. Its downtown has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2000 as the Osceola Commercial Historic District. Many of the original downtown buildings still stand, and the 1916 depot houses the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway, which runs train rides through the river valley. Cascade Falls, whose water power led to the village's founding, and the renovated millpond are among its historic attractions.

Outside the village, Horse Lake and Lotus Lake both have public boat launches. The Horse Lake launch is run by the Town of Osceola, and the Lotus Lake ramp sits inside a Polk County park with a picnic area.

Property in Osceola

  • Residential

In the village, homes sit near downtown, Cascade Falls and the renovated millpond. Around Lotus Lake, the Polk County park in the Town of Osceola adds a launch, vault restrooms and drinking water.

  • Land and acreage

Riverfront land in and around the village falls under the Lower St. Croix Riverway rules, which set buildings back from the water and the bluffline. Confirm current zoning with the village before buying.

  • Commercial

Many of downtown's original buildings still stand, and financial incentives encourage reinvestment in them. After a 2002 flood destroyed part of downtown, the historic dam and the millpond, the village renovated its infrastructure and the historic downtown.

The falls' water power led to the village's founding, and flour, grist and lumber mills were numerous here in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Across the river on Highway 243, Osceola Landing is the busiest National Park Service landing on the St. Croix, with separate launches for motorized and nonmotorized watercraft.

  • Getting around

The Twin Cities are under an hour away by car without traffic, roughly 45 miles.

  • School district

Osceola is served by the School District of Osceola. Boundaries can differ for rural parcels, so confirm the district for a specific address.
