Stillwater is the Washington County seat, on the Minnesota bank of the St. Croix. The 1931 Lift Bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reopened in 2020 for walking and biking and carries the Loop Trail across the river to Wisconsin.
Brown's Creek State Trail runs 5.9 miles from downtown at Laurel Street to the Gateway State Trail near Lake Masterman, on a level former rail grade.

The Loop Trail
The Loop Trail crosses the St. Croix twice, on the Lift Bridge downtown and on the St. Croix Crossing between Oak Park Heights and St. Joseph, Wisconsin, making a walking and biking loop through both states.

Stillwater Area Public Schools, ISD 834, serves both the city and Stillwater Township.
